Where Roman ambition meets the Mediterranean. Herod the Great raised this dazzling white-stone city from a forsaken shore and named it for Caesar Augustus, building a theater, a palace on the sea, a chariot hippodrome and one of the ancient world's great artificial harbors. For six centuries it was the capital of Roman Judaea: a cosmopolitan meeting point of pagans, Jews and early Christians. Here Pontius Pilate left the only stone bearing his name, the apostle Paul was held before his journey to Rome, Rabbi Akiva met his death, and Crusader kings later walked its moated fortress. We'll trace it all with the waves breaking where the emperors' ships once docked.
